Yesterday, as usually happens, I was going through a video on YouTube, but a red unusual message popped up.

message_from_youtube

What the…? Oh, right: I’m a bad pianist and – not because I’m looking for a sponsor or something – I published some videos of myself (one every three months?) playing my favorite songs. There were videos of “pure playing” and some howtos, even thought I’ve been a self-taught for quite a while. I was just sharing my own way of arranging songs, of playing, and some advices to those novice pianists who asked. There were songs like Your Song from Elton John, Desperado from Eagles, The little mermeid from Disney, Angel by Sarah McLachlan, You’ve got a friend in me by Randy Newman, etc…

I know it might sound obvious, but songs’ titles weren’t hidden in any way: they were instead written in huge fonts in the title of the video and in the description as well. Surprisingly, I hadn’t had the chance of sayin’ a song like Hotel California was anartwork of mine. Anyway, even though in copyright tips‘ YouTube page wasn’t clearly written, I sadly discovered that playing someone else song without his permission is a copyright infringement: it doesn’t matter if you played it by hear, or rearranged it on your own, or if it has been recorded in the worst quality ever (as it was, even if I tried to get the best from my phone camera). This is called a “cover”, and as a cover you should own rights for the song you’re re-arranging. That’s the point. No escape.

I do respect other people’s copyright and work, I appreciate the songs I recorded as much as I had decided to post it on YouTube, and I really don’t get  how playing someone else’s artwork might damage the author. Well, it might mean I was playing REALLY BAD! ;)

So what? As long as I don’t want to deal with meaningless (or at least debatable) rules I just removed all the videos from my channel. I do sincerely hope Charlie Chaplin won’t upset.

The thing that disappointed me the most was deleting all the comments posted by viewers through the years, with all the appreciations and critics, tips, greetings, and so on. I found useful (and useless) advices, some bad and good opinions (way too god, sometimes), anyway all those stuff was really appreciated. Because of that, I have decided – before deleting any video – to take a snapshot of the comments: and so I did, thanks to the PDF printer! I’ve packed up all the comments’ pages and now they lay aside in the memories drawer. No, seriously, I posted them all beside this post, so I can shout at the internet the need of sit down and talk about some topics which might not be priority, but they are still important, such as the copyright in the web-2.0 era.

Last, but not less important, I finally want to say thank you to everyone watched a video of mine, rated , commented or fav-ed it. Thank you, and greetings from Italy. Peace. Marco
